The Federal Government has called on Nigerians in the Diaspora to come back home and invest, saying the $21bn remitted by them last year would be put to better use in Nigeria.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, said this on Friday in Abuja during a press briefing on the forthcoming Diaspora Day scheduled for July 23 to 27.
He said, “Nigerians in the Diaspora should come and invest at home. If you don’t invest at home, nothing will bring you home. If you are looking for appointment and contract, you have to go through a whole process. Nigerians in the Diaspora are excelling in various fields of human endeavour and have continued to make great contributions to national development, particularly in education and health sectors.
“From available records, Nigerians in the Diaspora remitted $21bn in the last one year, which is the highest in Africa. This figure does not include unrecorded sums sent through individuals.”
According to the SGF, it was in recognition of the worthy contributions of Nigerians in the Diaspora to national development that the Nigerians Diaspora Day was instituted by the Federal Government in 2005.
