N18.3bn pension fraud: Convicted director collapses in prison




A former Director of Pensions Account in the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Sani Shuaibu, was on Sunday rushed to the National Hospital after he collapsed at Kuje Prison, Abuja where he was remanded for stealing pension fund.







The circumstances surrounding the incident was not clear, but Shuaibu who is on trial for pension fraud, was said to have collapsed around 5pm and was rushed to the hospital by the Chief Warder, Stephen Edogbanya.



Findings on Monday indicated that the former pension director was still receiving treatment at the National Hospital for an undisclosed ailment.



The Prisons Public Relations Officer, Ope Fatinikun, who confirmed the incident said the accused was under medical observation. He added that it was only the doctors that could reveal the nature of his illness.



He said, “Shuaibu was actually rushed to the National Hospital on Sunday evening but I believed he is responding to treatment now. He is not the only one we took to the hospital, there are other inmates who also fall sick and our prison doctor took them to the hospital for treatment.”



Shuaibu, who is on trial over an N18.3bn pension fraud, had been granted bail in the sum of N500m and two sureties in like sum by an Abuja Federal High Court presided over by Justice Adeniyi Ademola on July 13, 2013.



The court ordered that the sureties must have landed properties in the Federal Capital Territory, and must also swear to an affidavit of means.



He was remanded in the custody of Kuje Prisons following his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on June 7, 2013.



Shuaibu was arraigned alongside one Udusegbe Eric Omoefe and their companies, on 22 counts of obtaining money under false pretence, conspiracy to commit fraud and concealing the illicit origin of stolen pension fund, totalling over N18.3bn.



The said the companies are Gozinda Enterprises, Bashinta Nigeria Limited, Haleath Enterprises, Uthatak Nigeria Limited, Krasiva Badawulu Ventures Limited, Ebunu Attah Investment, Muha Millennium Motors Limited and Ribaile Petroleum Limited.
