Angry youths numbering about 40, on Tuesday, in Abuja protested against the death of 19 applicants during the immigration recruitment exercise and called for the sacking of the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro.
The youths who stormed the Ministry of Interior at Area one, Old Federal Secretariat,Abuja, splashed red paints at the entrance of the ministry’s building and shouted “murderers, murderers” at no one in particular.
The minister was however not in the office at the time of the protest which lasted for about 30 minutes.
Led by a lady who identified herself as Azania Mohammed, the protesters said they represented ‘Concerned Nigerian Unemployed Youths’ and demanded justice for those who died, and those injured in the botched immigration recruitment exercise.
The protesters who arrived at the ministry in groups of twos and threes, caught the security men by surprise, as they besieged the ministry’s entrance and also wrote the inscription ‘murderers’ at the entrance to the minister’s office.
Tension heightened when a pro-Moro group led by one Etuk Williams emerged from nowhere to oppose the first group’s call for the minister’s sacking or resignation.
Though no arrests were made while the drama lasted, the youths disrupted activities at the ministry as the workers abandoned their offices and watched them.
Some senior officials of the ministry moved to pacify the youths just as reinforcement of armed civil defence personnel were drafted to keep the peace and restore order.
As the security drove into the premises, both the pro and anti-Moro groups afterwards dispersed and dissolved into the crowd of workers and onlookers.
