Brave Policeman foils car-bomb attack in Yobe

A brave police officer intercepted a bomb-laden car in Damaturu Yobe State and arrested its occupant just before the vehicle was detonated, the military said Sunday.

Nigerian security forces are combating militants in Yobe State and two other northeast states of Borno and Adamawa where thousands of civilians have been killed by the extremist group Boko Haram.

The group struck in Abuja April 15 killing at least 75 people in a car bomb. Another attack on Thursday at Nyanya, the same scene of the first attack, killed 19 people.

Boko Haram has not claimed responsibility for the second attack yet.

The Director Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, said the Yobe incident occurred early Sunday.

He said the target of the attack was the “A” Division of the Nigeria Police Command situated by the main round-about in the heart of Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State.

The attempt was however foiled as the culprit was arrested by the police personnel on duty, Mr. Olukolade, a Major-General, said.

He said six tubes loaded with explosives as well as 20 litres of petrol and 11 bags of beans chaff were recovered from the scene.

Major-General Olukolade said video and electronic recording facilities were also recovered by the police and that an anti-bomb squad safely detonated the explosive.
