Lagos traders shut major markets, protest abduction of Chibok schoolgirls

Some major markets in Lagos were shut on Monday following a mass protest by traders over the abduction of 234 students of Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the affected markets include Apongbon, Balogun, Oyingbo, Mushin, Ikorodu and Iyana-Ipaja.

The Leader of Apongbon Market, Lagos Island, Mrs Adiat Alao, told NAN that the market was shut to protest the abduction of the girls.

Alao said the closure was a directive from the President of Market Women Association, Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.

“We are protesting the abduction of the school girls in Borno.

“We are mothers and we know what the mothers of the girls are going through.

“We also feel the pain as mothers, so we decided to close down the markets this morning to share in the pain being experienced by the parents of the girls.

“We feel for the abducted girls. It is a bad experience to abduct innocent school children.

“We will open the market in the afternoon, it is just for this morning,” she said.

Also speaking, the Leader of Mainland Markets, Mrs Basirat Balogun, said the abducted girls in Chibok had become a source of concern to all.

Balogun decried the level of insecurity that had plagued the nation and urged all citizens to pray for the country and its leaders.

She also called on the government to device means of putting an end to the menace of kidnapping and bomb blasts across the country.

The Vice-President, Head Tie Sellers Association, Lagos Island, Mrs Alake Quadri, said, “By the closure of the markets we will record some losses, but we do not mind because it is to protest the abduction of the school girls.”
