Banks in Akure shut over robbery scare

Banks in the Akure metropolis on Thursday hurriedly closed their doors to customers after news spread that armed robbers were on the prowl in the city.

Customers, who approached their banks at 11am, met the gates locked and those who were already in the premises were politely told to leave.

It was gathered that the information first reached one of the banks from where it was related to other banks.

The police was also promptly alerted, which in turn, deployed its men in the city to counter any attack.

Security operatives comprising soldiers and policemen patrolled the Oyemekun, Oba Adesida and Arakale roads in the city, where the banks are located, while Armoured Personnel Carriers were also stationed at some strategic locations.

State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Wole Ogodo, confirmed the development, saying the police had fully taken control of the situation.

He said the state police command was proactive and had quickly sent a formidable patrol to effectively man the likely areas of attack.

Ogodo added that the police command would not relent in its fight against crimes in the state.
