Brooke Shields recalls her 'overwhelmed' reaction after losing virginity at 22 to Dean Cain

Back in 1985, she wrote a book urging teenage girls to preserve their virginity for marriage.

But in reality, Brooke Shields first had sex at 22-years-old -  ten years before her marriage to tennis ace Andre Agassi.

And the star now reveals she had an unusual reaction to losing her virginity to actor Dean Cain - a Princeton classmate of Brooke's. 

Afterwards I got so overwhelmed that I jumped out of my bed. I actually kind of tumbled off it and started running' she writes in her new memoir There Was A Little Girl. 'I was buck naked streaking down a hallway and running like I had just stolen someone's wallet.

'Dean leapt up and ran after me with the comforter in his arms. He hugged me tight and asked me where I was going. I was afraid I was leaving my mother. 

'I didn't know where I began and where my mother ended and that meant I didn't know how to fit Dean in.'

Having been brought up in the spotlight by her stage mother Teri, Brooke had been 'terrified of physical contact with boys' and even says: 'I believe my mom wanted me to stay a virgin for as long as possible.

The actress, who played a child prostitute in 1978 film Pretty Baby and shipwrecked teen Emmeline in 1980s The Blue Lagoon, very much felt her mother's presence throughout her life, especially while dating Cain, who went on to play the lead role in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

'He was incredibly and painfully patient with me regarding sex,' Brooke recalls of Cain. 'But even when Mom wasn't around, I felt as if she was watching. We were always holding hands and trying to find ways to be alone and kiss, but poor guy, I made him wait and wait and my mom kept track.'

After splitting with Dean, Brooke went on to date Liam Neeson, while other romances included JFK Jr and John Travolta. She also maintained a friendship with Michael Jackson who she met when she was 13.

'We just felt safe with each other,' she recalls. 'I didn't want anything from him. We watched movies and ate candy and laughed at the craziness around us.

He wanted us never not to be with each other,' she added. 'We loved each other but it was not at all romantic. He was like a little kid who asked questions about dating. Nobody was nurturing him through that stuff. He was terrified.'

Following a tumultuous relationship with Agassi which ended in divorce after two years of marriage, Brooke, now 49 , remarried in 2001 to TV writer Chris Henchy and they have two daughters, Rowan 10, and Grier, seven.

In the memoir, published on November 18, she also discusses her mother's lifelong battle with drinking and the public misconception that she forced her daughter into projects she didn't want to do.

The actress was at her mother's side when she died in October 2012 after a decline into dementia.
