ICPC seeks information from individuals, CSOs

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission is seeking information on corrupt persons from members of the public and Civil Society Organisations.

Although the ICPC said it would protect the identity of all informants, it also said it would accept anonymous information.

An official of the anti-graft agency, Mr. Ezeh Nwafor, disclosed this while newsmen during a workshop organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Enugu.

The workshop, with the theme ‘Sharing responsibilities and building effective partnership: Bridging CSOs and state institutional gap,’ was organised under the framework of the European Union funded project ‘Support to Anti-Corruption in Nigeria.’

Participants, drawn from CSOs which seek to collaborate with anti-corruption agencies in the fight against corruption, received training from the UNODC, ICPC, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative.

Various speakers at the event stressed the need for the non-governmental organisations to play a prominent role in the campaign against corruption in the country.

Nwafor, who represented the ICPC at the event, told our correspondent that members of the public should not be afraid to step forward if they had credible information on corrupt persons or acts of corruption.

He promised that such information would be acted upon.

The workshop emphasised the implementation of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which recognises the important role of the civil society in the prevention of corruption.

In Article 13 of the UNCAC, governments are required to take measures to promote active participation of individuals and groups outside the public sector in the prevention of, and fight against, corruption.

However, Nwafor stressed the need for trust in the collaboration between CSOs and anti-corruption agencies.

He disclosed that the ICPC carried out background checks on CSOs before entering into partnership with them.
